On March 25, 2010 the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli hosted a delegation of the PRC government led by the Member of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, Vice Primier Liu Yandun. The delegation included a Chinese Minister of Education, Minister of Culture and other Chinese top-ranking officials.

The President Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts Marat Samsonov on his 85th anniversary. In his telegram Dmitry Medvedev noted: “You are a participant of the Great Patriotic War and the Victory Parade. You have lived through a hard life and creative school, painted a number of distinguished canvases devoted to crucial pages in the history of this country: the Battle of Kulikovo, the War of 1812, the Battle of Stalingrad and many others.

President Dmitry Medvedev has sent a birthday telegram to the eminent sculptor, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation Alexander Burganov. “You are well known in Russia and other countries as a talented sculptor, an author of distinguished and original works. You are represented in collections of the Russian State Museum and the State Tretyakov Gallery, your works adorn streets of cities worldwide. A man of multi-sided gift, you have written a number of books on art, have raised a new generation of artists”, - runs the telegram.

On March 22, to mark the 95th birth anniversary of the People’s Artist of the USSR Georgi Zhzhenov (1915-2005), a memorial plaque designed by the Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Andrei Balashev in partnership with the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts Vyacheslav Bukhaev was unveiled in Moscow on the house, 12 Zoologhicheskaya street, where Georgi Zhzhenov had lived from 1972 till 2005.

The annual “Fame” (Izvestnost) award in the “Art” nomination was presented to the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, the world renowned sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov. The “Fame” award was set up in 2005 to recognize achievements of prominent figures of culture, business, politics, sports.

On March 16, 2010 the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on a new staff of the President’s Council for Culture and Art including leading figures of Russian culture. Among its members are Dmitry Shvidkovsky, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Rector of the Moscow Institute of Architecture; Andrei Kovalchuk, sculptor, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts, Chairman of the Artists’ Union of Russia; Nickolai Mukhin, painter, People’s Artist of the Russia Federation, member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts, Director of the “Yaroslavl Icon” school.

On March 13, the People’s Artist of the USSR, the Russian Federation and Azerbaijan, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts Tair Salakhov has been presented with the regalia of an Honorary Academician of the International Academy of Culture and Art in the Hall of Oecumenical Councils of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.

On March 6, Nickolai Blokhin will give a masterclass in painting within the framework of his solo show (18 February – 21 March 2010) in the exhibition halls of the Academy Research Museum (17 University Embankment, St. Petersburg). Nickolai Blokhin was Grand Prize at the 2002 competition of the American Society of Portrait Artists (ASOPA), the largest portrait society in the world and a winner of Best of Show Award at the prestigious International Portrait Competition (2004) of the Portrait Society of America (PSA).

The “Holy Russia” landmark exhibition opened in the Musee du Louvre on March 2 by the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and President of France Nicolas Sarcozy provides a grand-scale survey of Russian art from the Beginnings to Peter the Great. The show is one of the major events in honor of the Year of France in Russia and the Year of Russia in France.

From February 18-25, 2010 on show at Sotheby’s in London were over thirty canvases by the People’s Artist of the USSR, the Russian Federation and Azerbaijan, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts Tair Salakhov. The focus of the exhibition supported by BUTA Festival of Azerbaijani Art and the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Great Britain was a monumental six-meter triptych “Country of Fires” (2007) – a pictorial hymn to the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan.

From February 22-24, 2010 UNESCO Headquarters in Paris will host events in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the city of Yaroslavl. The Yaroslavl land will be represented by the Governor of Yaroslavl Region Sergei Vakhrukov, the Mayor of Yaroslavl Victor Volonchunas and the first woman in space Valentina Tereshkova. The focus of the events will be an exhibition “Ten Centuries – Ten Histories”.

The highest decoration of France will be presented to the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. The National Order of the Legion of Honor (Ordre national de la Legion d’honneur) was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 and is awarded by the President of France. In his letter dated February 1, 2010 the French President Nicolas Sarkozy has specially noted: “This authoritative decoration which I have considered it necessary to confer on you from my personal reserves of crosses is an expression of gratitude for your services to this country and proved devotion to France”.

The portrait of Gury Marchuk, the prominent Russian scientist in the fields of computational mathematics and physics of atmosphere, President of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1986-1991 has been created by the People’s Artist of Russia Vasily Nesterenko. The handover ceremony at the building of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences was attended by President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli and President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yury Osipov.

On January 15, in Tsereteli Art Gallery, 19 Prechistenka street, there was a round table on “Ethics-Aesthetics, Criticism – Clinic” curated by Evelina Shats. The focus of the discussions was a solo show of works by Fausta Squatriti entitled ECCE HOMO and organized by the Russian Academy of Arts, Italian Institute of Culture and the Brera Academy in Milan.

To mark the 100th birth anniversary of the eminent diplomat and politician Andrei Gromyko, a memorial plaque designed by Zurab Tsereteli was unveiled on the wall of the house in Leontievsky Pereulok where he had lived from 1963 till 1989. Andrei Gromyko served as Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union from 1957 till 1985 and was the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet in 1985-1988.
