The Russian President Dmitri Medvedev decorated the People’s Artist of Russia, Member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts Boris Messerer with the Order For Services to Motherland 4th Rank for his big contribution to promoting the Russian fine arts and distinguished creative work.

In November, 2008 the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, 17 University Embankment, St. Petersburg will host a research conference commemorating the 250th anniversary of the oldest in Russia art museum.

In St. Euthymius monastery in Suzdal on the National Unity Day, November 4, the Archbishop of Vladimir and Suzdal Eulogius consecrated the cross installed on the burial place of the national hero Dmitri Pozharsky (1578-1642) and the foundation stone for the marble chapel of Dmitri Pozharsky to be recreated according to the original destroyed in 1933. The ceremony was attended by Georgy Poltavchenko, Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the Central Federal District; Alexander Avdeev, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation; Nikolai Vinogradov, Governor of Vladimir Region. The chapel is planned to be completed by November 4th, 2009.

On November 4, 2008 at the Kremlin ceremony in honor of the National Unity Day the Russian President Dmitri Medvedev presented state awards to our compatriots living abroad as well as to representatives of other countries for their contribution to the promotion of Russian art and culture. The artist Ilya Kabakov, a winner of many international prizes and an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts has been honored with the Order of Friendship.

On the National Unity Day, November 4, 2008 the Archbishop of Vladimir and Suzdal Eulogius consecrated the foundation stone for the chapel commemorating the national hero Dmitri Pozharski (1578-1642) to be recreated near his burial place on the territory of St. Euthymius monastery in Suzdal. The ceremony was attended by Alexander Avdeev, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation.

In December, 2008 after the restoration work, the 17th century unique tapestry “Victory of Alexander the Macedonian Over the Persian Tsar Darius” (the Battle at Arbela), one from the series of five spalliere entitled History of Alexander the Macedonian will be returned to the interiors of the Research Library of the Russian Academy of Arts. Only two of them have survived till these days.

On November 4th, 2008 Russia celebrates the National Unity Day: the state holiday commemorating the liberation of Moscow from Polish invaders in 1612 by people’s volunteer corps. On November 4, 2005 the focus of the celebrations was in Nizhni Novgorod, where there was an unveiling ceremony for the replica of the monument to Minin and Pozharsky created by Zurab Tserteli for Nizhni Novgorod. The monument stands in front of the Cathedral of John the Baptist, the place where Kuzma Minin called to people for the national uprising and joining the people’s volunteer corps.

On October 30, 2008 the Russian Academy of Arts and the Association of Artists of Decorative Arts will hold a forum of artists who work in the technique of tapestry on the topic “Tapestry in the System of Modern Art” to be supported by a video show of their works.

On the territory of Nikolo-Perervinski Monastery in Moscow will be placed a monument to a prominent hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, preacher and theologian, Metropolitan of Moscow Platon (Levshin, 1737-1812). The monument has been designed by Anatoli Bichukov, People’s Artist of Russia, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts.

The People’s Artist of Russia, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts German Pashtov and representatives of Krasnoyarsk Studio of Xylography presented 40 graphic works as a gift to the Local History Museum in Tskhinval, South Ossetia. The action was arranged with the assistance of the Ministry for Emergency Situations.

On October 1, 2008 at the age of 108 passed away Boris Efimov, Hero of Socialist Labor (1990), People’s Artist of the USSR (1967), Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts (1975), winner of three State Prizes (1950, 1951, 1972), Laureate of the Moscow City Hall prize “Legend of the Century” (2003).

The Album-Catalogue of the 17th – 20th Century Paintings and Drawings from the collection and funds of the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts has been published in honor of its 250th anniversary in a series “Treasures of Russian Art” by the White City publishing house. The book edited by Veronika Bogdan contains 126 illustrations representing paintings and drawings by Russian and European masters that are the highlights of the Museum’s collection.

On September 24, 2008 with the blessing of Alexi II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and Ignatius IV, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, the 3m tall sculpture of Christ the Savior will be presented as a gift from Russian people to the monastery of St. Thecla in Maaloula, the most important Christian site in Syria. The bronze sculpture has been designed by Alexander Rukavishnikov, People’s Artist of Russia, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts.

On September 17, 2008 at the award ceremony in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts, 21 Prechistenka street, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov were presented with attributes of an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts.
In his greeting speech, Zurab Tsereteli expressed his regret, that the high honor was awarded to the celebrated artists with such a delay.
