On September 15, 2008 in Moscow was inaugurated Marpho-Mariinskaya Cloister. On September 16, Alexi II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia consecrated Pokrovski Cathedral, principle church of the Convent which is going to mark its centenary in 2009.

On September 3, 2008 the bronze monument to Sergei Korolev, founder of Russian space program was set up as a centerpiece of the renovated Alley of Spacemen at VDNH subway station in Moscow. It has been designed by Salavat Scherbakov and Sergei Scherbakov in association with members of Korolev’s family and his friends.

The bronze bust of the Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Natalya Bekhtereva (1924-2008) will be dedicated on the Glory Alley of St. Petersburg Humanitarian University of Trade Unions on September 1, 2008. The sculpture, designed by People’s Artist of Russia Grigori Yastrebenetski, will find its home next to busts of Dmitri Likhachev, Michael Anikushin, Andrei Petrov, Natalya Dudinskaya and other distinguished people.

The monument to the celebrated circus athlete Alexander Zass will find its home in front of the Orenburg circus where he started out as a circus actor one hundred years ago. The monument designed by Alexander Rukavishnikov, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, has been delivered to Orenburg to be inaugurated on the verge of the City Day on September1, 2008.

On July 14, 2008 Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts had a meeting with Paul Kulikovski, great-grandson of grand duchess Olga Alexandrovna, sibling of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II. Paul Kulikovski is an economist and financier. He lives in Denmark, where Olga Romanova resided till the end of her life. The meeting has been also attended by Elena Ryurikova, director-general of a Charity Foundation set up in Moscow in 2006 by Dmitri Romanov, great great-grandson of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I. He is a president of the Foundation.

On June 23, 2008 in Tsereteli Art Gallery, 19 Prechistenka street, was held a presentation of degree works by graduates of the Architecture Department of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute. The topic of the defense was an elaboration of a pilot project for the international youth tourist city-satellite GAGARINGRAD with a memorial complex on the site where the first spaceman Yuri Gagarin landed. It is planned to be located near the city of Engels, Saratov Region and to be completed in 2011 to mark the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s space flight.

On June 21, 2008 Zurab Tsereteli, founder and Director of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, President of the Russian Academy of Arts, opened an exhibition of works from the collection of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art entitled Spring of Russian Avant-Garde. The prestigious Bankamura Museum of Art in Tokyo is the first to present the early 20th century avant-garde works by such celebrated Russian artists as Natalia Goncharova, Niko Pirosmani, Kazimir Malevich, Marc Chagall, Paul Filonov and others who could create an unparalleled style of modern art that will continue to affect the world art.

On June 10, 2008, within the framework of the 10th World Congress of the Russian Press in Moscow Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts participated in the meeting of Alexy II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia with UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura. The meeting was held in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, that had been recreated by the Academy artists under Zuran Tsereteli’s leadership.

On June 10, 2008 in the Museum “Creative Legacy of Academician Yuri Orekhov” will be held the forth annual award ceremony for Y. Orekhov Prizes in the field of sculpture. The Prize was set up in 2005 by the Sculptor Foundation and the above Museum under the auspices of the Russian Academy of Arts to foster young talented sculptors. Yuri Orekhov (1927-2001) is one of the prominent Russian sculptors of the late 20th century who was appreciated both in Russia and internationally. He was a Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts and Honorary Member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara (Italy), winner of Lenin and State Prizes.

On June 5, 2008 the celebrated artist Zurab Tsereteli took part in the closing ceremony of Vladikavkaz International Festival as an honorary guest invited by its President Akim Salbiev and the Jury Chairman Victoria Tokareva. In his greeting speech to participants of the Festival the President of the Russian Academy of Arts expressed his unreserved admiration of the beautiful nature and hospitable people of North Osetia, thanked for the hearty welcome and invited to visit his studio and art gallery in Moscow.

The Orthodox Russia Festival of Russian Art was held in the Italian city of Bari from May 21-25, 2008. It was arranged by the Russian Culture Foundation together with Asso Apulian Association. At the conference arranged within the Festival framework were displayed photographs of works by Zurab Tsereteli dedicated to Christian Saints and devotees.

The ceremony of Philanthropist International Prize awarding will be held in Tsereteli Art Gallery, 21 Prechistenka street, Moscow on May 24, 2008. The Prize, unique in the world, is awarded to physically challenged people for their prominent achievements in culture and arts. It is financed entirely from private funds thus maintaining the Russian traditions of philanthropy and patrons of art.
