Pierre Cardin and Marc Zakharov Have Become Honorary Members of the Russian Academy of Arts
On November 27, 2008 the world renowned couturier Pierre Cardin visited Tsereteli Art Gallery, 19 Prechistenka street, where he explored the highlights of the exposition. At the award ceremony in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts, 21 Prechistenka street, Pierre Cardin and Art Director of Moscow Lenkom Theatre Marc Zakharov were presented with attributes of an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts. The ceremony was attended by noted figures of culture and leading Russian fashion designers.
Pierre Cardin has been the first couturier who was elected a Member of the French Academy of Fine Arts. He is a holder of many high awards including the Commander of the Order of Honor Legion, Commander of the National Order of Merit, Commander of the French Order of Arts and Literature, Peace Ambassador to UNESCO. A man of great talent, Pierre Cardin has revealed himself both as a distinguished fashion designer and a brilliant businessman who created one of the most influential and prestigious fashion empires.
Since 1973, Marc Zakharov has been an Art Director of Moscow Lenkom Theatre, one of the most popular theatres in Russia in other countries. In 1983, when the Theatre was on tour in France, in Espace Pierre Cardin was shown “Yunona and Avos”, performance staged by Marc Zakharov that won a big success and was called the first Russian rock-opera. People’s Artist of USSR Marc Zakharov is a laureate of several State Prizes and a winner of many awards.
This event has taken place on the verge of a big program between Russia and France: The Year of France in Russia and the Year of Russia in France. The Russian Academy of Arts, which actively participates in the program events, has been maintaining a long-term collaboration with the French Academy of Arts. In 1998, academicians Zurab Tsereteli and Tair Salakhov were elected its Corresponding Members. In 1998, the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli was decorated with Vermeil Medal, the highest reward of the city of Paris. In 2005, he became an Officer of the French Order of Arts and Literature.
