The 75th Anniversary of the Department of Theory and History of Arts of I. Repin St. Petersburg State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture

On October 9, 2012 the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli and members of the Academy’s Presidium visited I. Repin St. Petersburg State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture to take part in the International Research Conference “Modern Problems of Academic Education of Art Historians” devoted to the 75th anniversary of its Department of Theory and History of Arts. Zurab Tsereteli welcomed the Conference participants and presented the Academy’s Letter of Greetings to the head of the Department.

The Department of Theory and History of Arts of I. Repin St. Petersburg State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture was set up in 1937. Among its founders were Professors A.S. Guschin, M.V. Karger, M.M. Dyakonov, G.G. Grimm, N.B. Baklanov, V.F. Levinson-Lessing. Later the teachers of the Department were such noted art researchers as A.L. Kaganovich, I.A. Bartenev, A.G. Vereschagina, A.N. Savinov, N.N. Nikulin, A.P. Chubova and others. Besides theoretical and historical disciplines, its students practice in drawing and painting, as well as have a rare opportunity to learn the techniques and technologies of art materials in the Institute’s laboratories and workshops.

The Department of Theory and History of Arts offers full-time and evening study, as well as a post-graduate course. The two Chairs of the Department - Russian Art and Foreign Art – are headed today by such recognized art historians as the Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts (RAA), Prof. V.A. Lenyashin and Corresponding Member of the RAA, Prof. N.M. Lenyashina. The Department traditionally invites leading specialists from major museums including the State Hermitage and State Russian Museum to give lectures for its students.
