The Discussion of Urgent Problems of Art Education at the Russian Academy of Arts

On January 16, 2013 in the exhibition halls of the Russian Academy of Arts hosting a show of diploma works of the Academy’s Art Institutes entitled “Successors of Great Masters” there was a discussion of urgent problems of art education with representatives of mass-media.

The President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli, Vice-President of the RAA Andrey Zolotov, Rector of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute Anatoly Lyubavin, Head of the Chair of Monumental Painting of V. Surikov Art Institute Evgeny Maximov, noted art historians told the reporters about the challenges in today’s art education.

The discussion focused on the urgent need in workers-specialists of creative professions resulted from the elimination of art enterprises in the early 1990s, such as All-Russian Art and Industrial Center named after Vuchetich, Art Foundry in Mytischi, Podolsk Art Fabrication Center and others. Now, there are practically no colleges for training workers in the field of sculpture, monumental painting, prints, decorative and applied arts. To fill the gap, the Russian Academy of Arts has initiated the establishment within the structure of the Academy of an education center for training of such specialists.

One more problem is a job placement of graduates of art institutions. Today, there is no system of job placement of graduates and state commissions through creative unions of artists that existed before. The Russian Academy of Arts tries to solve the problem through its creative workshops in Moscow and St. Petersburg and a number of Russian regions providing a post graduate study. The panelists also spoke about the necessity of the state and sponsors’ support to young artists, as well as the preservation and development of the Russian school of art education and sharing experience with art educational entities in other countries.
