Tatyana Nazarenko, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation, member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts, head of the workshop in V. Surikov Moscow Academy Art Institute has been awarded 2009 Triumph Prize, the first independent award in Russia given for the highest achievements in literature and arts.

A memorial plaque commemorating Vasily Grossman was unveiled on January 26, 2009 on the apartment house, 23 Krasnoarmeyskaya street, where the writer lived. It has been designed by Alexander Tsygal, People’s Artist of Russia, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts in association with the architect Alexander Velikanov, winner of several State Prizes of Russia and timed to the annual International Memorial Day for Victims of Holocaust on January 27.

He created a full-length sculptural portrait of the Patriarch in 2003 within My Contemporaries series. Zurab Tsereteli met with Alexy II more than once, particularly during his work on the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The sculptor has collected a lot of the Patriarch’s photographs that he is going to show to the public in February.

On December 11, 2008 Tsereteli Art Gallery will present the 4th International Festival of Children’s Artworks “Thousands of Suns” featuring over 500 paintings by young artists aged four to seventeen from eighteen countries. Among the participants are physically challenged and orphan children. It has become a tradition to start the Festival with masterclasses by President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. The artist will give two three-hour masterclasses for over 60 children.

The 500th anniversary of the birth of Italian architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) has been included in the list of anniversaries with which UNESCO is associated in 2008. The Russian Academy of Arts commemorates the event with the 18th Alpatov Readings: Andrea Palladio and World Art.

Members of the Russian Academy of Arts are mourning over the decease of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II. The President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli attended the Requiem Service in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow on December 9, 2008.

On November 27, 2008 the world renowned couturier Pierre Cardin visited Tsereteli Art Gallery, 19 Prechistenka street, where he explored the highlights of the exposition. At the award ceremony in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts, 21 Prechistenka street, Pierre Cardin and Art Director of Moscow Lenkom Theatre Marc Zakharov were presented with attributes of an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts. The ceremony was attended by noted figures of culture and leading Russian fashion designers.
